Gov. Whitmer Proclaims November as ‘Michigan Craft Beverage Month’ as holiday seasons kicks off

Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed November as Michigan Craft Beverage Month, recognizing Michigan’s robust craft beverage industry’s vital economic development and social benefits.
“Michigan is home to some of the best breweries, wineries, cideries, and distilleries in the nation, and my administration will continue to work to support this thriving industry and grow our economy,” said Governor Whitmer. “As we move into the holiday season, I encourage Michiganders to join us in supporting our award-winning craft beverages. It’s not only important to Michigan’s economy and tourism, but they taste great too! Let's keep supporting strong Michigan-made businesses and creating economic opportunity in every region of the state.”
Michigan currently ranks sixth in the nation for the number of craft breweries and is a consistent national top producer of hard ciders. The state ranks ninth in the country for wine production, bottling more than 3.5 million gallons annually. With more than 300 breweries, 200 winery tasting rooms, 100 distillers and 90 hard cider producers across Michigan, the industry thrives at the intersection of agricultural development and beverage manufacturing.
“Michigan is known around the world for being an agriculture powerhouse, which has allowed our craft beverage industry to earn national recognition,” said Gary McDowell, director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development. “Our dynamic growth within this industry encourages new entrepreneurs to start their business in Michigan while supporting our local businesses and tourism efforts. This November, and every month, we’re encouraging Michiganders to shop local craft beverages and support ‘Michigan Made’ products!”
Craft beverage businesses directly contribute to a community’s economic development. It’s common to see craft beverage businesses investing and revitalizing buildings in downtown and lesser-developed areas. These investments can breathe economic life into underutilized spaces, serving as an anchor for increased economic development.
“Although many Michiganders realize the impact of this industry and are avid members of this community, we want to encourage everyone to support their local craft beverage producers this holiday season,” said Jenelle Jagmin, director of the Michigan Craft Beverage Council. “Whether it’s purchasing a gift for a friend or pairing a beverage with celebrations of all kinds, keep locally made Michigan craft beverages and other homegrown products in mind.”
